Sabrina Weld came to ceramics through an early love of folk art and large-scale puppetry, drawn in by the organic qualities of clay and paperclay for creating figures. She earned her BFA in Ceramics and Sculpture from Alfred University in 1992, and built a commercial career in New York creating sculpture, building puppets for stage companies, and crafting figures and sets for the display world — including walk-around costumes and the iconic 5th Avenue Christmas windows.
After a long hiatus, she returned to her own ceramic sculpture practice in Los Angeles, exhibiting and winning awards in several juried shows, before moving back East to dedicate herself fully to her art in the Hudson Valley.
Weld builds her pieces with clay coils and slabs, creating figures that imagine how we find confidence, what drives us, and how we connect with each other. Her visual language combines folk art, religious icons, mythology, and elements from the natural world. Fire represents motivation, and clouds represent our inner worlds. Images of protection — trees of life, apples of truth, all-seeing eyes, hearts, and hands — echo in quiet ways throughout the work.
